What is Purply?

Purply is a completely new source of food, based on the marine, animal

the raw material Ciona, which has a very low carbon footprint.

Same great flavour. Good for the climate

Purply is a brand new ingredient made from Ciona, a raw material from the sea that has a very low carbon footprint.

Ciona is naturally low in fat, providing us with animal proteins, minerals and other nutrients. Purply has a neutral flavour, which makes it suitable for dishes where we usually use minced meat.

In addition, Ciona can be cultivated here in the Nordic region with a carbon footprint of only 0.22 kg CO2-eq/kg. That's equivalent to just 1% of the climate emissions of red meat! So this is fantastic news for anyone who wants to cut down on their meat consumption for the sake of our planet. With Purply, it's possible to make familiar dishes that still taste as they should.

Climate action has never tasted better!

The food production the world needs

The ocean is the food bowl of the future, and According to the UN, at least 10 per cent of global food production should come from the sea. Today, it's only 2 per cent, while agricultural land all over the world is under severe pressure. We need to manage the resources we have in a sustainable way.

With long traditions in aquaculture and magnificent marine natural resources, we have all the prerequisites to succeed with low-trophic farming in the Nordic region, where Ciona grows naturally. Cultivating them here can also be positive for marine ecosystems and water quality. This is the food production that the world needs.

Natural. Nordic. Nice.

Pronofa, which is behind the Purply brand, has employees in both Norway and Sweden and is the first in the world to start farming Ciona on a large scale. All types of food production have an impact on the climate and nature, but farming Ciona actually has several positive effects on the marine ecosystem.

WE WILL NEED 70% MORE FOOD IN 2050

Climate and nature considerations are becoming increasingly important as we realise that we need to shift our diets to more sustainable alternatives in the future. By 2050, we will globally Need 70 per cent more food than we can produce today due to population growth - with virtually zero emissions.

Our ambition is to help us produce food in a way that has far less impact on the climate, nature and our surroundings. To achieve this, we need to make it easy to make smart choices. For us, it's about making Purply a natural part of the - initially - Nordic diet. Every meal you eat with Purply is like a personal climate action.
